The long winter is long gone and it's time to dust off the sandals and swimming gear. Enjoy these ideas for great cheap ways to have fun in the sun.

Another long cold winter has melted into a warm green spring. Before long, summer will come, kids will be out of school, families will take holidays. These ideas are great inexpensive ways to pass free time on long summer days.

Take a Bike Ride

Riding a bike is not only a good warm weather pass-time, but it is excellent exercise. Bike riding helps use the energy produced by eating and helps burn calories. It is also good for the heart and builds leg muscle no matter how intense or leisure the ride.

Visit a Park

Take your friends or family and visit a nice park for an afternoon. Bring along a Frisbee, a soccer ball, a foot ball a basket ball. Go for a walk. Walking is good exercise and takes very little effort. An afternoon at the park can be complete with a meal. Lunch food that doesn’t need to be cooked makes for a great picnic.

Go for a Swim

Swimming is always a summer favourite, especially for children. For many who have their own pool, this is an activity easily enjoyed. But for those who don’t have a pool, beaches can be just as fun and maybe more. Lake water may not be as clean as the pool, but it has waves, deeper and shallower areas and no limiting walls. Even if there is no swimming in the lake, the beach is still a great place to skip rocks, make sand castles, play beach volleyball, or just relax.

Play Games

Those sunny summer days are always complemented by rain. There are plenty of indoor games that are great for those rainy days. Card games, video games or board games can all be an interesting way to pass the time on a rainy day. For more rainy day ideas, visit 7 Fun Things to Do On Rainy Days.

Initiate a Water Fight

A timeless childhood favourite, water games are a fun way to cool off during the summer. Water guns are fairly inexpensive and can be found in toy departments almost anywhere. Water-filled balloons can also be a fun accessory to water games.

Have a Barbecue

Summer is always accompanied by the smell of freshly cut grass, campfire and barbecue. Barbecue is rarely enjoyed during winter months because of the cold. Take advantage of the warmth of the summer and celebrate it with a barbecue.

Take a Drive

Roll the top down, open the sun roof – no matter what the car is, roll the windows down and let the breeze in. Go for a drive along country roads and take in the refreshing summer scenery.
