Summer has come, the air is warm, the pool is cool, but it's raining outside. Enjoy these ideas for cheap ways to have as much fun on rainy days as in the sun.

Although summer may be a blossoming, warm, sunny season, those sunny days will always come with rainy ones. Free time that may normally be spent outside soaking up the sun can be boring on rainy days, but it doesn’t have to be. Instead of allowing boredom, these suggestions are free for all.

Make a Puzzle

Most people will have fun with a good puzzle. Puzzles are an activity that can be done alone or with others. They can be enjoyed by all different ages and they’re great for entertaining kids who might otherwise wish it weren’t raining. Puzzles are also a healthy mental exercise.

Read a Book

Reading a good book can help pass the time while it rains. Reading is not only excellent for maintaining good mental health, but is a great personal activity. To make it a great family activity, read out loud and make all the voices to make it interesting. For those who prefer not to read something as long as a full book, read a magazine.

Play Video Games

Despite what some may think, non-violent video games, played in moderation, can help keep the mind sharp. Adventure games that include puzzles to solve and historical lessons are particularly good for young ones to learn.

Play Monopoly

Any board game can be a fun way to pass the time during a rainy day. Monopoly is an excellent choice because of it’s long playing time. The players will not notice the time running by while they are absorbed into the game. By the time the game is interestingly complicated, the rain may have stopped.

Try a Crossword

Most crossword puzzles are difficult enough to remain interesting, and easy enough to keep the interest. Like a puzzle, crosswords are a healthy mental exercise that are actually easier the more they are completed. They also consume the mind enough to dissolve rainy day boredom.

Make Music

Musicians are everywhere, and for those who are musicians, it is easy to make music and to find joy in it. For those who are not musicians and would like to be, it’s not hard to learn. Music is good for everyone. It can be just as well enjoyed by listening to it as by playing or singing. Making music would make great use of a rainy day and it could match the sound of the rain or drown it out.

Have an Indoor Picnic

Compile some sandwiches and salads, light a few candles in place of a campfire, spread a blanket on the floor and have a picnic inside. There would be no mosquitoes and it can be just as fun as an outdoor picnic. In case the rain turns stormy and the power fails, the candles are already lit.

Indoor activities need not be left for colder months. During rainy summer days, reading, playing games, making music and other indoor activities are all great constructive ways to enjoy free time.
