Located near Silicon Valley, this park not only offers scenic hiking, but also a look into mining history.
Almaden Quicksilver County Park in San Jose was once home to one of the world's largest mercury mines. "Quicksilver" is another word for mercury. Cinnabar, which looks like red rock, was excavated from the mines, crushed and roasted in rotary furnaces to create liquid mercury. Mining started in the late 1800s and continued for more than 125 years until the mines dried up. At one time, approximately 1,800 miners and families called the area home. Relics from the mining area can still be seen today. In addition to the beautiful green scenery that the 3,977-acre park has to offer, hikers will also encounter shuttered mine shafts, structures in ruins, equipment, and more. The park combines scenic hiking trails with a dose of local history. Almaden Park Trails and SitesThere are four entrances to the park. Each one offers access to different historical sites. The park map has trail details and site descriptions. Maps can be found at each entrance to the park. At the main entrance off Hacienda Rd. visitors can stop at the New Almaden Mining Museum. In addition to a trail map, a "historic trail" map is also available that allows hikers to do a self-guided tour of historical sites in the park. Specific points of interest include:
Of particular interest is the San Cristobal Tunnel. Hikers are allowed to enter this mineshaft to see first-hand what type of working conditions miners had to endure. Several trails are jogger-friendly, which allows moms to take young children for an outing in the park. The park also allows dogs, horses and mountain biking on certain trails. Check trail map for specific information. There are a few picnic tables scattered throughout the park. Spring is a great time to visit the park since wildflowers are in bloom. Summer can be hot, so be sure to pack water and sunscreen. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. Guided tours are available.
