Going on a trip and not a frequent flier? Read these important regulations and guidelines before flying the friendly skies.
Due to the tragic events of September 11th, security levels and the rules and regulations for airline passengers have drastically changed the way we travel by air. Here are some important suggestions and tips before flying the friendly skies:
Check the official website of the chosen airline or travel agent for specific rules, regulations and restrictions regarding baggage, travel with children or pets, gifts, curbside check in, and parking prior to departing for the airport.
If flying internationally, contact the proper agency for cash limit information
If traveling to another country, become familiar with the travel regulations and restrictions in that particular country prior to travel.
If travelling with children, there may be additional documentation needed(for instance, if separated or divorced, a signed and notaritzed letter from the other parent may be required).
Understand the different airport security levels, and what they entail.
Be prepared for security level changes at the airport.
Restricted and allowable items when traveling by air may change. Following the August 2006 plot, the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) implemented a 3-1-1 plan for carry on items:
According to the TSA, as of this writing, each passenger is allowed ONE, QUART-SIZE, clear plastic, zip-top plastic bag of travel-size toiletries (three ounces or less).
The one-quart bag, per person, limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. The three ounce container size is a security measure. The clear plastic bag must have a zip-lock top and can not be any other size
As of this date, drinks or beverages brought from home or purchased prior to reaching security checkpoints in containers larger than three ounces, are not allowed. If they are in a three ounce or smaller container in the quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag, that is allowable.
Beverages may be purchased in the airport, after clearing airport security checkpoints.
Baby food, formula, breast milk and other baby items are allowed to be carried on board. However, a baby or toddler must be traveling with the flier, and those items may be inspected at security checkpoints.
Electronic items such as camcorders, laptop computers, mobile phones, camera equipment(some restrictions may apply), Pagers, PDA’s are allowed on the airplane, or may be checked as well (however it is highly recommended expensive and fragile items kept with the flier)
If one is traveling with undeveloped film, visit this website for further information,
Medications and special needs may have additional requirements.
Check the TSA website (or similar agency if you live outside the US) for updated information prior to leaving for the airport!
If in doubt, leave it out!
Confirm the reservation prior to leaving for the airport. Some airlines will notify travelers via cell phone or email if the flight is delayed.
Arrive at the airport early, and pack plenty of patience!!
For a full listing of items that are allowed on-board as well as those that are restricted, please check the TSA website prior to departing.
