Bringing the right equipment is essential to creating an enjoyable camping experience. There is much more to consider bringing than merely a tent.

Camping with the necessary equipment can lead to an enjoyable experience. Campers are wise to carefully consider their supply list before venturing into nature.

Planning a Camping Trip

Summer often lures people outdoors. Lush greenery all around, birds chirping, long, sunny days. The call of nature is at hand. One of the most obvious ways to enjoy nature is with a camping trip. However, even for nature lovers, embarking on camping unprepared can lead to a weekend of misery. Sweltering heat, lack of sleep and bug bites can add up to a most unpleasant experience. Desperate campers may even flee to the haven of their air-conditioned cars to escape what was supposed to be a vacation.

Fortunately, there are a few simple steps which can lead to a comfortable camping experience. Certain gear is essential in camping comfort. Bring the right supplies and a weekend of communing with nature just may be a success.

Top Most Essential Camping Gear

  • Bug Spray. Never go camping without it. Tiny as they are, bugs can destroy an outdoor experience in a matter of moments. Ticks, red bugs, mosquitoes, horse flies and the list goes on. No sane camper leaves the house without bug spray.
  • Tent. More importantly, placement of the tent. Look for a soft, grassy, shaded area if possible. In hot environments, don't skip covering the tent with a protective shield.
  • Air mattress or camp mat. Being lifted off the hard ground is extremely helpful when trying to get a good night's sleep. Sleeping on twigs or lumps is not at all comfortable. Also, consider the climate of the campsite when selecting bed linens. Sheets may be more appropriate than the classic sleeping bag in hot environments. Don't forget the pillows either.
  • Food. Don't head out into the woods armed only with granola bars. Bring a cooler packed with sandwich makings, fresh vegetables and hot dogs for starters. Fresh fruits and water are also a must.
  • Air circulation. Battery-operated fans are a great way to help ward off the heat. Particularly helpful at night when trying to sleep. Sleep and perspiration are just not a good combination. If the campsite has power, a small house fan will be a welcome addition.
  • First aid kit. Hopefully, the kit will rest in the vehicle unused. However, it is vitally important if needed. Calamine lotion, rubbing alcohol, band aids should all be included in a first aid kit.
  • Games. Everyone needs some down time. Board games, cards and perhaps crayons and coloring books for the children can provide some low-energy amusement when needed.
  • Camp chairs. Simply because sitting on the ground gets old. When returning from the hike in the woods or canoe trip across the lake, it's nice to have something with some back support to rest weary feet.
  • Light. People naturally want lanterns and flashlights in the evenings. There are several convenient led options available today. Consider a hands-free headlamp in lieu of the traditional flashlight.
  • Towels. Nobody wants rain or spills of any type on their camp out. However, if either situation occurs, towels are lifesavers.

Other items to consider bringing include wet wipes (perhaps anti-bacterial), trash bags, sunblock, paper towels and a camp table. For novice campers, or for those with young children, a weekend camping trip should be sufficient.

With a little planning and preparation, anyone can have a positive camping experience.
