On September 4, 5, and 6, 2009, Grant Park in Chicago, IL will host a variety of jazz musicians, boasting a lineup that includes local and national musicians.
Centered around the Petrillo Bandshell, the various stages are located at the corner of Jackson and Columbus. Run by the Jazz Institute of Chicago, this free concert event runs from noon until 9:30pm each day.
History of the Chicago Jazz Festival
The festival began as a tribute to composer and band leader Duke Ellington in 1974, according to Explore Chicago. After his death, a group of musicians held a festival in his honor. Four years later, the John Coltrane Memorial Concert was held in Grant Park as well by a different group of musicians in conjunction with Chicago’s Council of Fine Arts. In 1979, the Jazz Institute of Chicago began planning its own jazz festival, prompting the Mayor’s Office of Special Events to combine the three jazz festivals into one large one, held on Labor Day in Grant Park.
