A History of Fun in Lake George NY
Known as “The Queen of American Lakes”, Lake George is 32 miles long and up to 200 feet deep in some locations. There are nearly 200 islands that offer wonderful opportunities for picnicking or overnight camping. There is much history surrounding Lake George, including an important role in the Revolutionary War. During the Victorian era, it was a playground getaway for the rich and famous who built expansive homes on its southern shore, earning it the name "Millionaire's Row".
There are thousands of bodies of water in the region...here are just a few in the Southern Adirondack region:
- Another small but lovely location just off Exit 25 of the Adirondack Northway, Loon Lake is a great summer destination for families. Enjoy all types of recreation here, including boating, fishing, skiing, tubing, and more. Loon Lake is just 15 minutes from both Lake George village and the bustling Gore Mountain ski center, making it a perfect year-round destination!
- Tiny Brant Lake is north of Lake George, located in the town of Horicon. Just six miles long, it is a lovely location for vacationers during all four seasons, providing spring and summer fun, autumn beauty and great ice fishing during the winter.
- Among the many smaller lakes and ponds in the Southern Adirondacks are Burnt Pond and Crystal Lake in the town of Horicon. Small and private, these lakes and ponds are truly getaway destinations. Tiny Sherman Lake in the town of Warrensburg and Trout Lake in Bolton Landing are ideal for those looking for a quiet vacation getaway, but not secluded. Glen Lake and Lake Sunnyside are in the nearby town of Queensbury.
