Halloween Events

Top Kid-Friendly Halloween Events

Sep 9, 2008 Kelby Carr

Halloween can be about dressing up and trick or treating. There are some amazing Halloween events around the U.S. and globe to take Halloween to a new level for kids.

The nice thing about finding a major Halloween event is that it's a chance for children to truly indulge in Halloween. In this era of rules and fears, kids hardly get a chance to trick or treat in their own neighborhoods anymore. Many Halloween activities have become very sanitized in the past decade, with kids trick or treating at shopping malls or out of car trunks at church parking lots.

Some of these events will give the whole family a chance to revive the fun of Halloween:

Boo at the Zoo

The National Zoo in Washington, D.C. hosts ticketed Halloween parties for four nights featuring 40 treat stations, animal encounters, and festive decorations. This is an extremely popular Halloween party, so be sure to buy tickets as soon as possible before they sell out.

Find out more about Boo at the Zoo.

Close to home alternative: If you can't make it to D.C., check your nearest zoo. If you don't have a decent zoo nearby, look for local farms that open for the fall harvest. Many times, they feature a petting zoo and festive Halloween decor.

Walt Disney World's and Disneyland's Halloween Events

Take one part Halloween and one part Disney World or Disneyland and, well, you're talking kid Heaven. The kids and adults can dress up on costume (and you might even consider adding on a princess or pirate makeover for earlier in the day). There will be trick or treating, a character cavalcade each night in Anaheim or a Halloween parade in Orlando. The event has special tickets across several dates in October (although the 31st costs more in Anaheim, and is already sold out in Orlando). It is held at Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim or Magic Kingdom at Orlando.

Find out more about Anaheim's Disneyland's Mickey's Trick or Treat Party or Mickey's Not-so-Scary Halloween Party in Orlando.

Close to home alternative: If you can't travel this far, check your nearest theme park. Nearly any theme park will have some sort of festivities related to Halloween.

State Street Halloween Happening Parade

Kids don't just watch this festive Chicago Halloween parade, but they can come wearing costumes and join right in the fun. Afterwards, kids get to enjoy some trick or treating and a costume contest.

Close to home alternative: Check your local town or nearby city for municipal events or parades. You might also check a local parks and recreation agency, as they very well could have some local event or festivities planned. Your local churches and schools will often plan Halloween events as well, although sometimes these are referred to in more of a harvest and fall manner.
