Family vacations should be fun for all, yet not financially draining. The following suggestions provide enjoyable, inexpensive and memorable vacation options.

Most families want to provide a fun and memorable experience for their children, when taking a family vacation. Unfortunately, vacations can really drain one’s budget, especially if there are numerous family members. This, however, need not be the case. The following suggestions listed below, provide nice, inexpensive ideas for a memorable family vacation, which the kids will remember for years.

Tip #1

Consider visiting a state park. State parks provide numerous fun activities for parents and their children. First, most state parks contain campgrounds. The cost to stay in one of these is considerably less than that of a hotel. Pitch a tent. Children will really enjoy the change in scenery from the usual bedroom in a hotel to spending nights outdoors. They will enjoy making a campfire, under adult supervision. Besides being educational and learning about fire safety, a dinner cooked on a campfire, along with the traditional campfire songs and marshmallow melts, are enjoyed by all. In addition, most campgrounds provide access to running water and restrooms, allowing the family to still have some comfort. Activities in these parks can include hiking, animal watching, rafting, swimming and fishing.

Tip #2

Visit a local amusement park. Flying to a well-known resort or amusement park can become costly when considering airfare, hotel, car rental and park admission fees. A local amusement park for the most part, eliminates the first three costs. In fact, by eliminating the other costs, one can purchase a season pass, allowing the family to enjoy multiple visits to these parks at different times. This allows everyone to enjoy himself or herself more, because the sense of urgency to see everything in a compressed time frame is eliminated, allowing all to be more relaxed. Also, if there are multiple amusement parks in the area, visiting different ones provide more variety, than being committed to a single park for the duration of one's vacation.

Tip #3

Explore local history. Many people never think about sightseeing in their own neck of the woods. Most admit seeing the sights to far off destinations, having not seen the ones in the spots they live in. Every area has some sights of local interest. Besides saving on airfare, hotel and car expenses, exploration of one’s vicinity will provide an education to local history and folklore, as well as instilling a sense of pride in one's community. Multiple day trips can be planned in this fashion, allowing the family to look forward to several days of fun.

Tip #4

Visit relatives in different parts of the country or world. A trip outside of one’s vicinity can be an exciting prospect. If planned properly and ahead of time, airfare can be purchased inexpensively for all. Visiting relatives, allows the children to get to know relatives that aren’t seen on a regular basis. Also, chances are that the cost for a hotel will be eliminated, if one can stay with the relative. Seeing cousins, grandparents, uncles and aunts are always fun for children. In addition, the flight and potential to explore sights outside of one’s own area is educational and enjoyable, as well.

The key to a fun family vacation isn’t money; it’s planning. Given enough time, one can read about and organize fun activities for all. By budgeting and planning wisely, many families will be able to take fun, yearly vacations, without breaking the bank.
