While it might be tempting to just see Labor Day weekend as an extra day off from work and school, there is actually a lot of fun that can be had with limited time, a limited budget and, best of all, limited hassle.
Labor Day Weekend Away from the Beach
It's a last splash, so families around the world make a bee-line for the beach. That means you will spend an awful lot more time in your car (and consuming extra gas) and a lot less time enjoying three short days of Labor Day Weekend fun.
Instead, figure out which direction the nearest popular beach is, and go the opposite direction. You will be going against the traffic, and you very well might discover a unique spot for the family. Instead of lounging at the beach, stay at a hotel with a pool. Visit museums and art galleries, or simply stroll around a pedestrian friendly town.
Get Outside for Labor Day Weekend
The mountains are frequently a different route than the beach, and they can provide a welcome break from the heat of summer. Mountain hiking or nature walks can be a wonderful Labor Day weekend getaway.
Best of all, the great outdoors is pretty huge. As long as you don't go to the busiest spot in town, you should have some space to get away from people and crowds. You might even consider packing a picnic.

A nice way to avoid extra expense, extra time, and extra traffic jams is to find a destination that is within an hour or two of your home. Sure, it isn't very exotic. But if your aim is hassle free for Labor Day weekend, this is a great way to getaway without the stress.
There are two tactics. You can find a nearby city, and enjoy an urban adventure hitting major attractions. You will deal with some crowds this way, but maybe not as badly as you would at a destination like the beach or a theme park.
The other option is to find a smaller city or town that is a short drive away. There are probably some interesting shops and activities to enjoy, it will not be as crowded, and you can enjoy the long weekend at a slower pace.
Labor Day Weekend at Home
OK, yes it is lame. But if you are looking for hassle-free, few things are as easy as not going somewhere. Still, that isn't very fun. Jazz things up with a sleepover for the kids combined with a fun barbecue and party for the adults. Make it a potluck and you'll need to do little more than spread the word, supply the plates, and open the door.
