For couples seeking some special time together, it's all about the setting. Here are ideas for romantic getaways for adults-only time or honeymoons.

Romantic getaway isn't a predefined list. For some, the bustle of Manhattan is ideal, and for others a remote and deserted island would work best. For some couples, each person is on one extreme or the other, making it especially challening to plan a romantic getaway. Use this list to find you and your sweetheart's romantic getaway personality:

Urban Addict

You both love the excitement of the city, and you consider a subdivision to be rural. A romantic city is the ideal choice for this couple, but think outside the standard New York-Los Angeles-Chicago box. It is no longer insanely expensive to jet off to Paris or London for a long weekend. Consider some of the second tier cities that get less attention, like Denver, Cannes or Venice.

XOXOX-Games

For you two, the idea of simply lounging at a beach for a week looking longingly into each other's eyes is about as appealing as an ice-pick in your adventurous hearts. Book an adventure travel vacation together. There are few better ways to bond than to scale a mountain and get a rare view below, or to kayak wild rapids together, or to hike a rugged trail like the Appalachian Trail or crossing the Pyrenees. Do a joint bungee jump for some real adrenaline (besides that generated by passion).

Island Getaway

For many, think romantic getaway and an island or beach immediately comes to mind. There are endless resorts that can take all the trouble by including most extras right in the package. That leaves the couple to while away the days enjoying one another's company and enjoying the setting.

Spa Relaxation

While this may sound more like a getaway for girls, a spa destination can actually make a great romantic getaway for couples. Many resorts are offering packages for couples, and many offer great activities besides the typical massages and mud baths. Most now have packages for men or couples, and many are located at ski resorts or have other activities like hiking trails and fine dining.

Cozy Cabin

For some real one-on-one time, a cabin rental is an extremely romantic choice. Many feature all or most of the amenities of home for the less-than-adventurous, and many are quite secluded. In fact, this is a great choice for couples who want to meet up with other couple friends.

Opposites Attract

In some cases, your interests and the types of destinations you enjoy could be completely opposite. Luckily, the world is an amazingly diverse place. Look for places that are hitting top 10 lists in travel magazines, and places with a blend of attractions and diversions. If one is a history buff and one a shopaholic, for instance, look someplace like Boston and split time during your trip on both pursuits (yes, together!). If one likes the city and one the country, find a small city with a mix of both atmospheres.
