School vacations give families time to travel technically, but there are issues. School breaks can be really short, and everyone else is off from school, too.
Still, there are many ways to take advantage of school breaks and school vacations to enjoy a family getaway. Yes, even when it isn't summertime. Go Against the School Vacation FlowYou know where most families are going. If it's Memorial Day or Labor Day weekend, it's probably the beach, for example. Save hassle, and save cash, by going the opposite way. If everyone's doing the beach, head the other way to a mountain cabin. If it's spring break and Disneyland is going to be swarmed, avoid theme parks and enjoy an urban museum adventure. Allow Extra Time for the School Vacation TravelKnowing that there will be a lot of competition on the roads, at the airports, and at attractions really is useful information. At least you won't be surprised by the long lines for rides at the nearest theme park. The good news is you can plan accordingly. The timing is important. Consider leaving before dawn to avoid the crowds, or head out or back a day before or after everyone else. It can mean the difference between rotting in stopped traffic for hours or zipping to your destination. Hit popular attractions or restaurants just a little earlier or later than the peak time. If you aren't sure when that is, call or email and ask beforehand. Plan School Vacation Activities at or Near HomeIf travel is simply going to be too much nuisance, consider what you can do at home instead. Odds are good several other families (including some of your kids' friends) are stuck at home, too. Make plans for a big party, or to meet up at a local attraction or museum. Simply meeting up at the nearest park or playground can make a big difference for kids moping that they are stuck at home. Plan Your Vacation Outside School VacationsThis sounds a bit like anti-advice, but it may be that the best way to enjoy a school vacation is to take it when there is not a school break. You might look at the school calendar for items like teacher work days or other school breaks that aren't universally held at all schools. If all else fails, though, don't be afraid to travel. Kids shouldn't be stuck at home nine months out of the year, so take the kids out of school if you must. Get their work ahead of time, make plans for when and how they can get it done (such as en route), and plan some ways for your children to learn during their unauthorized school vacation.
