Summers in Sacramento are hot-very hot. Here are some ideas for giving the home air conditioner a break while staying cool.
When the mercury rises in Sacramento, there are several places to keep the family cool while waiting for the sun and temperatures to go down. Running the air conditioner all day can be pricey, so leaving the house during the hottest part of the day is a good way to save pennies as well as have some summer family fun. Places to Swim or go Boating in SacramentoSacramento is not known as the River City for nothing. The American River runs right through the Sacramento area, with several nice spots to go swimming or boating. Rent a kayak at the Nimbus Hatchery and float around, or rent a raft from River Rat and float lazily down the river—they pick rafters up at the end and take them back to their cars. Alternatively, Sacramentans head to any of the riverside parks and recreation areas to laze on the beach or swim at their leisure. Folsom and Natoma Lakes also offer plenty of opportunities for the whole family to go swimming, boating and fishing, and of course there are many community pools as well. Go to the MoviesThe movies is the perfect place to get out of the summer Sacramento heat. The theaters are air conditioned and the typical movie experience lasts at least two hours. Some of them even have arcades to provide an excuse to stay inside longer. The Century Theater in Folsom and the UA Theater in El Dorado Hills are very comfortable and nice. The Century Theater in Downtown Mall in Sacramento has the added benefit of being inside the mall, where those wishing to stay out of the sun can shop in comfort before or after the movie. For a cheaper movie excursion, the Regal Cinema at Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights charges only $3.00 during the week and $3.50 on weekends. Sunrise mall is fully enclosed and provides plenty of opportunity to shop in cool comfort. Arden Faire Mall also has a movie theater and is fully enclosed. Go to a Library or MuseumLibraries and museums tend to have air conditioning. The Discovery Museum is fun and educational for kids of all ages and interests, and the Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento is perfect for train enthusiasts. Both the Downtown and Folsom Libraries are open every day of the week and provide a cool retreat to read, study or browse the internet. No one enjoys being hot all day, every day. In Sacramento, where the temperatures regularly rise above 100 degrees, it is important for the physical and mental health of the whole family to find ways to have fun and stay cool.
