Take your teen on summer vacation, and he or she is likely to sneer at the idea of museum visits and historic tours. Try these fun and funky summer vacations with teens.
Here are some summer vacation destinations teens will think are cool (and parents will dig them, too):
Why teens will like it - The funky South Street section of Philadelphia is filled with hundreds of unique shops like alternative clothing stores, music shops, guitar stores, and even a magic store. Kids will also enjoy telling friends they tryied a famous Philly cheesesteak. There are also a few colleges here, injecting the city with a youthful vibe.
Why parents will like it - There are still tons of traditional attractions here, from the Liberty Bell to museums and a wealth of historic buildings in a city rich in American history. Mom should hit nearby Manayunk for boutique shopping and cafes.
Why teens will like it - They can hit the shops and restaurants in bustling and young Georgetown. There are shops selling indie music, punk t-shirts and funky jewelry. I don't care how cool a teen is, they still get a charge out of seeing the White House.
Why parents will like it - Two words: the Smithsonian. The city is packed with amazing museums that are free to enter. Yes, free. Teens will be more likely to go for a stop to the Air & Space Museum or the contemporary, donut-shaped Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, which features a cool ArtLab for Teens.
Why teens will like it - The State Street thoroughfare has lots of shopping, and is located right next to a great stretch of sandy beach. They will be pretty impressed if you ditch the traditional walking tour for a rugged Jeep tour.
Why parents will like it - There's shopping, fine dining, golfing and wineries. Santa Barbara is also a place where the ocean meets the mountains, making it wonderfully scenic for photography.
Why teens will like it - They get to see (or even stay at) a castle, the Chateau Frontenac. This is a smaller city, but it has cool neighborhoods lined with unique shops and cafes. Kids can also try a real-life video game, Tagball.
Why parents will like it - Fabulous food, unique architecture and a chance for the kids to practice or learn a little French language are all sure to please parents. Leave the kids in the room for a night, and enjoy a romantic dinner for two at one of Quebec's wonderful restaurants.
