Tax refunds provide a nice windfall each year that we qualify for one. Instead of doing something boring like paying off bills, here are ideas for spending it on travel.

Whether you get a smaller refund or a big chunk of cash, here are trips you can afford with that money:

$500 or Less Tax Refund

  • Take a weekend getaway somewhere just one-tank away in your region. Even just a short break to get away from it all for two or three days can be quite refreshing, and a great chance to stop the insanity and really notice and bond with family members.
  • Look for last-minute flights and packages somewhere fun. Lastminutetravel.com is a great resource for finding easy packages including flight, hotel and sometimes extras like attractions tickets. Travelzoo also posts lots of great cheap deals.

$1,000 Tax Refund

  • Travel somewhere further away. Especially in the off-season, it's no challenge to find cross-country or even trans-Atlantic flights for $200 or $300 per person if you hunt for deals on sites like Expedia, Priceline or Travelocity. Make it worth the longer flight by going for four days.
  • Stay somewhere fancy. You don't always have to hit generic budget chains. You have some unexpected money, so use it to splurge on a long weekend at a luxury resort.

$2,000 and Up Tax Refund

  • With this kind of money, you can take a decent family vacation. Visit and indoor water park for a week, or take a short cruise.
  • Visit that great destination you've always wanted to see, but never had the time or money to visit. Many people think Europe is too pricy, for instance, but you can easily afford a European vacation with this money if you are careful in your planning.
  • Rent an RV for a week and roam about the country. You can usually find one for a little over $1,000, and you'll also save on food since you can cook onboard.
  • You could also stash this money into a special savings account just for travel, and save up for an even more ambitious trip.
