The Tizer Botanic Gardens and Arboretum is the only one of its kind in western Montana. It specializes in fantasy, theme gardens and a wide array of beautiful flowers.

Tizer Botanical Garden owners, Richard and Belva Krott, encourage visitors to find as many hidden surprises as they can during their visit. They take pride at creating the unexpected and filling their visitors with wonder. These surprises can be found throughout the acres of well-planned gardens located just outside of Helena, Montana.

Little Surprises

The first thing that visitors notice about the Tizer Gardens is the fanciful use of plants and flowers. Plants are in old boots, in-line skates, high-heeled shoes, teapots and more. There are also small characters hidden in the foliage. Many of these character relate to the theme of the garden.

Big Surprises in Tizer Botanical Garden’s Themed Gardens

Each garden at Tizer Gardens has its own theme. Some examples of these gardens are the Teapot Garden, The Herb Patch, The Secret Garden, The Woodlands, Xeriscape Garden, and the Fairy Garden. Throughout the themed gardens runs the Prickley Pear Creek, which gives the area the calming feeling that only comes with the sound of trickling water.

In The Secret Garden there is a bench for visitors to sit and contemplate on. On it, visitors can jot down their thoughts in a journal. Many have written poems and left them for others to read.

One themed garden that is particularly popular is the Gnome Village. Built with the help and inspiration from the kids of the Alternative Youth Adventure Program in Bolder, Colorado, this garden features precocious trolls and upside down trees.

Upside down trees are made from the remains of trees toppled by Montana storms. Co-owner of Tizer Gardens, Richard Krott, rescued these trees and replanted them upside down. The roots became hair for these tree creatures that is bedazzled by adding ornamental corn, marigolds and petunias.

Handicapped Accessible

A balcony built into the mountain allows visitors to look down at the Gnome Garden below.

Amazingly, 90% of the Tizer gardens is handicapped accessible, including the balcony. This also includes garden bridges and paths, so no one has to miss out on the beauty and tranquility of the gardens.

Tizer Botanical Garden Events

Many events are held at the Tizer Botanical Gardens.

The cabin in the center of the gardens, laden with baby's breath and twinkle lights, is often used as the bridal quarters during weddings.

The gardens also hold annual events, such as the Children's Fairy Festival and Shakespeare in the Garden.

Admission is $4 for adults and children 6 and under are admitted for free.
