Remote Vacations Are Great for The Whole Family

Aug 19, 2008 Laura Block-Stewart

Take time to locate a vacation spot that is far away from the typical conveniences of life. It provides the opportunity to connect with nature and the family.

Whether living in an urban area or just on the outskirts, there are many conveniences available. So much so, that these conveniences are often taken for granted. It is important to take a break from these conveniences and connect with what is really important in life. Take a vacation to a more remote place to become more in tune with nature, to strenghten a marriage and the bonds with children.

Today’s Society

The conveniences that are available in today's society compared to fifty years ago is amazing. It is easy to DVR a favorite show, turn on the air conditioner, run the dishwasher and talk on the cell phone at the same time. Prepared foods are also readily available, as well as electric wine openers that actually open the wine by themselves. Local markets are available at almost every corner and people can purchase whatever they need. Take a vacation to a remote place to help transform ideas about what and who is really necessary in daily life.

Remote Vacation Spots

Take time to research remote areas of the world. Determine how safe the location is and be aware of any of the local dangers before traveling there. Find a place that is located at least 45 minutes away from a grocery store, that doesn’t have a television, a dishwasher, or cell phone. Research the islands off the coast of Maine, a lake deep in the woods in New Hampshire, a site in the desert, or a stunning place in the mountains.

Deepen the Relationship With Nature

Once in the remote spote, take time to really breathe in the air. Listen to the local wildlife. Enjoy the weather changes. Pick local berries and prepare a healthy meal made with local foods.

Listen to the wind blowing, the call of a local bird, or the rush of nearby water. Wash the sheets and hang them outside for a fresh clean smell. Go to bed when it is dark and awake when the sun begins to rise. Enjoy being in nature without the interruption of the rest of the world.

Strengthen the Marriage

Vacationing in a remote place can give a marriage the opportunity to strengthen and heal wounds that have built up through the years. Prepare meals together, hike and learn about different trees and plants in the woods. Swim in the nearby water and read books and poems to each other. Talk, hold hands and really listen to each other without the interruption of the television, the cell phones, the computer or friends stopping by. Share hopes and dreams as they may have changed since the last time there was an opportunity to really discuss them.

Enjoy Time with The Kids

Children in today’s society often have to fight for their parent’s attention. They compete with their parent’s jobs, the cell phone, the computer, the television, etc. While in a remote place, the kids have the attention of their parents. It creates an opportunity for play and opportunities to teach lessons about life.

Without television, Ipods, computers and other electronic games, children are forced to connect with their siblings, friends and parents. It provides a wonderful opportunity for them to read, play games, learn about their surroundings, talk about hopes and dreams and connect with the people that are important to them.

When a family returns home to the conveniences of life it povides an opportunity to appreciate them, but they will forever remember the time spent away.
