During winter travel with kids, winter clothes can be a major concern. You want to be sure kids are safe and warm enough. Here are winter clothes travel tips with kids.
Believe it or not, probably a major mistake parents make (especially parents of babies) is to over-bundle children.
Remember that they are probably comfortable in winter clothes that you would wear. If you're in a long-sleeved shirt, the children don't need three layers and a winter coat.
Over-bundling children, and especially babies, can even be dangerous as a child can overheat. A good option is to dress your child as you dress yourself, but also bring along a blanket or extra layer in case the child seems cold.
You don't want children out in extreme temperatures, especially if they are not used to it. Children who live in colder climates and play outside at daycare each day when it's 32 degrees, for instance, won't be too bothered being outside in cold weather.
If you live in Florida and you're visiting Minnesota in February, your child will be shocked by the temperature change. Play close attention and carry extra layers and winter clothes accessories like hats, gloves and scarves in case your child gets uncomfortable.
If you are going on a family ski vacation, consider that your kids will be active and warmer than they would simply being outside.
In that case, dress them warmly but make it easy for them to unbundle a little. A winter coat paired with hat, gloves, ear muffs and scarf will allow the kids to remove extras and tuck them into pockets while on the go.
If you will be shopping along Chicago's Michigan Avenue in 20 degree weather with a strollered child, that is a different story. Keep the child warm, and also cover with a blanket (although you should not cover the child's face and should frequently check to be sure the child isn't getting overheated).
If your child is repeatedly whining that he or she is cold or hot, instead of just barking to keep their coat on (or off), listen. The kid could be telling the truth.
If nothing else, kids who keep screaming about taking coats off will probably quiet down if you take it off and that winter cold chills them. The main thing is you can't assume you know how comfortable your child feels. It's important to listen so the child doesn't get too cold or too hot.
