» ariahfine - Would the PeaPod work as a Permanent Crib?

I just read the review on the PeaPod travaling playpen/crib. I'm wondering if something like that could work as a permanent crib. My wife and I are about to have a baby. We currently have one room with our mattress on the floor. This seems like it would work great as a permanent crib for our newborn. Any thoughts?

Hi there - I think this is a very good question. newborns are one thing, but as soon as your baby can even roll over, you'l really need a more secure system. And especially once he or she is mobile! The peapod is very handy for travel, but I'm pretty sure it can't take the place of a standard crib.
It's a whole other issue, but many parents have luck "co-sleeping" with their babies as well. But that's a personal parenting choice to make. Good luck, and have fun with your baby!

I don't know that I would use it as a permanent crib. You might consider a bassinnet at first, and then a travel playpen afterwards. I did use a travel playpen as a permanent crib when we traveled for several months in Europe with out daughter. She was one and it worked well. I was also able to find a mattress for the playpen overseas. I don't know if they make them for American playpens, but it made a big difference.

In fact, you might even consider ordering a French playpen, if there's a way to do that. They are much thinner than American versions, and you can get a folding mattress for them.
